The railway tunnels above Donner Lake were built by Chinese laborers in the 1860s. The tunnels were hand drilled and blasted, leading to an untold number of deaths. The tunnels were abandoned when the train was re-routed in the 1990s. They are easily accessible today from atop Highway 40 and are filled with colorful graffiti, and snow and ice in the winter.
